MDE-LIO will offer a fall braille class in Roscommon for parents, teachers, paraprofessionals, Orientation and Mobility Specialists, and other personnel who work with students who are blind or have a visual impairment. This class will give beginners who have little or no experience with the Unified English Braille (UEB) code the knowledge and practice necessary to effectively support students who use braille.
Participants will learn:
- The alphabet
- Punctuation and contractions
- An introduction to the Nemeth Math Code
There will be 16 two-hour sessions for this class. Most of the sessions will be held online; participants will receive instructions for accessing these sessions before the class starts. Participants must have internet access and a computer with a camera.
Three sessions will be held on site at C.O.O.R. ISD on the following dates:
- August 20
- October 8
- December 10
This class requires a textbook:
Ashcroft's Programmed Instruction: Unified English Braille
MDE-LIO has a limited number of books to loan (available on a first come, first served basis), so it is highly recommended that participants purchase their own to mark/highlight for study purposes and to keep as a useful resource. The book may be purchased from SCALARS Publishing for $104.50.
