Backpacking 101 is an opportunity for youth ages 13-17 who are blind or visually impaired to explore fundamental backcountry camping skills in an outdoor learning environment. Backpacking has long been an outdoor recreational pursuit, but special equipment, skills, and techniques often become structural barriers for people to get involved. The range of potential outcomes and benefits are numerous, from increasing physical health to developing self-determination.

Led by experienced outdoor educators, participants will learn how to organize and pack a backpack for multi-day travel, select proper backpacking clothing, choose and set up a campsite, and prepare food on a camp stove or over a fire. Participants will also learn skills in leadership, group dynamics, personal judgment, and decision making.

Scholarships may be available to eligible participants. For more information, visit LIO's scholarship page. Space is limited, so sign up today and discover the world beyond the trail head—the world where motorized vehicles cannot go!
