Camp Tuhsmeheta invites students ages 13-17 to explore South Manitou Island. Located in northern Lake Michigan, South Manitou Island is part of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.
Camping on the island will give us practical experience with daily living skills, cooking, and establishing an organized camp at which food, fellowship, and fire will help us unwind and wrap up our great days on the island.
Scholarships may be available to eligible participants. For more information, visit LIO's scholarship page.
- August 13: Meet at Camp T to issue equipment, review plans, and divide up food.
- August 14-15: On August 14, we will travel to South Manitou Island. For two nights and three days, we will explore the island’s coastline and visit shipwreck sites, old growth forests, and lighthouses. We will also explore the island’s interior, touring early 20th century farms, cemeteries, and school houses.
- August 16: Travel back to the mainland and Camp Tuhsmeheta for our closing night of activities and a good night’s sleep before departing for home the next day.
