MDE-LIO will offer a spring online Unified English Braille (UEB) class for parents, teachers, paraprofessionals, Orientation and Mobility Specialists, and other personnel who work with students who are BVI. This class will give beginners who have little or no experience with UEB the knowledge and practice necessary to effectively support students who use braille. A certificate of completion will be issued by the Michigan Department of Education.
There will be 16 sessions for this class. Scholarships may be available, if eligible.
- Participants will learn:
- The alphabet
- More than 180 contractions (and rules that pertain to them)
- Attend 16 two-hour instructional sessions
- Complete weekly assignments outside of class instruction
- Complete midterm and final exams
All sessions for this class will be conducted online. Participants must have a computer with a camera and a reliable internet connection. You will receive instructions beforehand on how to access the class.
This class requires a textbook (purchase or borrow):
Ashcroft's Programmed Instruction: Unified English Braille
MDE-LIO has a limited number of books to loan (available on a first come, first served basis), so it is highly recommended that participants purchase their own to mark/highlight for study purposes and to keep as a useful resource. The book may be purchased from SCALARS Publishing (ISBN: 978-0-9960353-0-9).
