$45 for college students and family members of students who are BVI

MDE-LIO will offer a summer braille class in Oakland County for parents, teachers, paraprofessionals, Orientation and Mobility Specialists, and other personnel who work with students who are blind or have a visual impairment. This class will give beginners who have little or no experience with the Unified English Braille (UEB) code the knowledge and practice necessary to effectively support students who use braille.

There will be 16 two-hour sessions.

Participants will learn:

  • The alphabet

  • Punctuation and contractions

  • Typeforms

  • An introduction to the Nemeth Math Code

Required Materials

This class requires a textbook and companion reader:

  • Ashcroft's Programmed Instruction: Unified English Braille (Printing 3, Copyright 2014)

  • Ashcroft's Programmed Instruction Companion Reader: Unified English Braille

MDE-LIO has a limited number of books to loan for the course; at this time, all of the books have been reserved for those who have already registered. The books may be purchased from SCALARS Publishing for a total of $144.50.
