ASL Assessment Support

MDE-LIO is committed to providing relevant and effective support for students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing (DHH), including supporting the assessment of students' American Sign Language (ASL) skills.

Although MDE-LIO no longer offers the Modified Sign Language Proficiency Interview (MSLPI) assessment, we will continue to support schools by training school staff to conduct ASL assessments at the intermediate school district (ISD) and local district level. Assessment results provide data that individualized education program (IEP) teams need to determine baseline skills, plan instruction, monitor student progress, and adjust interventions.

We appreciate your patience during this transition. Please contact Beth Rice at riceb3@michigan.gov or John Kirsh at kirshj@michigan.gov for further information.
