Description

Ready to work and learn valuable life skills? Join the Michigan Department of Education – Low Incidence Outreach (MDE-LIO) and the Bureau of Services for Blind Persons (BSBP) for a multi-session workshop focused on financial literacy and employment. During four virtual sessions, participants will dive into understanding pay stubs, taxes, work-related soft skills, and other financial literacy skills. Participants will also have an opportunity to work (for pay) at the Michigan Transition Services Association’s in-person conference March 9–10, 2025. Adult family members may also attend a special one-day program at the conference on March 10. Make a positive impact in your community and learn some essential life skills along the way!

Participants will:

  1. Learn how to read a pay stub.
  2. Learn about taxes and how they impact your paycheck.
  3. Learn and practice soft skills.
  4. Gain work experience in a supported environment.

This workshop will be held via four virtual sessions in February and two in-person sessions in March:

Audience

This event is for students in Michigan, ages 14–26, who are blind or low vision and have an open case with BSBP.

Online Event Expectations

Participants are expected to be respectful and courteous to others during the online portions of this event. MDE-LIO reserves the right to mute, turn off video, and/or remove participants who do not adhere to this expectation.

Accommodations

It is important for participants to request accessibility accommodations at least three weeks prior to the event. Outside agencies MDE-LIO contracts with to provide accommodations cannot guarantee services if requests are made in less than three weeks.
