On March 16, families of children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing (DHH) enjoyed a day of fun and learning at Family Matters! in Lansing.

Family Matters! is held each spring. The event features informative presentations for parents and fun activities for children who are DHH and their siblings. This year, 85 families attended.

At the event, parents participated in a Q-and-A session and learned from individuals who are DHH regarding their preferred communication mode. A keynote was also provided by Djenne-amal Morris, whose son has CHARGE syndrome. Morris has years of experience supporting and empowering families.

While parents were in sessions, children played games and completed a scavenger hunt. They also enjoyed presentations and activities with 4th Wall Theatre Company, which provides classes for children and adults, including individuals with disabilities.

Family Matters! is organized by Michigan Hands & Voices in partnership with C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, Michigan Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Program (EHDI), and DeafBlind Central. MDE-LIO also supports the event.
