Description: Orientation and mobility (O&M) is part of the educational process that prepares students with visual impairments to travel independently and safely. The Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) travels to the students’ assigned schools and/or home to provide direct and/or consultative services relating to the visual impairment. O&M services enable the students to travel safely, efficiently, and independently in their home, school, and community environments. The students range in age from birth through 26 years. While the position will be housed at the Ottawa Area Center, multiple local districts will be served and will require travel throughout Ottawa County.

Teacher Consultant – Visually Impaired, Montcalm Area ISD

Description: The person filling this position will be expected to:

  1. Provide direct services to students with visual impairments.
  2. Provide VI Teacher Consultant services to local districts and ISD educational teams.
  3. Plan, Implement and Monitor classroom accommodations for students with a visual impairment, including support for the classroom teacher(s).
  4. Collaborate and partner with the  Orientation and Mobility specialist. 
  5. Serve as a member of the Multi-disciplinary Evaluation Team (MET) concerning students referred or receiving VI Teacher Consultant services.
  6. Assist general and special education personnel with the special education planning process as needed, including data collection and recording, special education evaluations, and IEP meetings.
  7. Keep building principals, local school district coordinators of special education, and the Montcalm Area Intermediate School District Associate Superintendent for Special Education informed of any issues that may significantly impact the delivery of special education programs and services.
  8. Develop and implement in-service training in specified areas of need.
