Are you interested in learning American Sign Language (ASL), but don’t know where to start? Are you nervous about learning a new language as an adult? Do you have questions about ASL? Join MDE-LIO consultants John Kirsh and Amanda Schneider for an opportunity to learn more about ASL from a Deaf adult and parent perspective. Resources for learning will be shared, and time will be available for an open discussion.


  • Learn about the resources available to learn ASL.
  • Ask questions about ASL in a safe environment.


This event is for adult family members of children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing who are interested in learning about ASL.

Required Technology

To access this event, participants must have reliable internet access and a computer with a camera. This live webinar will be held via Zoom. Participants do not need to have a Zoom account to participate in the webinar, although you might be prompted to download a plugin. Online Event Expectations

Participants are expected to be respectful and courteous to others during this event. MDE-LIO reserves the right to mute, turn off video, and/or remove participants who do not adhere to this expectation.


An American Sign Language interpreter and captioning will be available during this event. It is important for participants to request any other accommodations at least three weeks prior to the online event. Outside agencies MDE-LIO contracts with to provide accommodations cannot guarantee services if requests are made in less than three weeks.
