The Sensory Kids Impaired Home Intervention (SKI-HI) curriculum is a comprehensive approach to family-centered home intervention for families of infants and young children who are identified as deaf or hard of hearing (DHH). SKI-HI programming helps families learn how to promote language and communication in a way that best matches the child’s needs, which could include the use of Auditory-Oral, Visual/Sign Communication, and American Sign Language (ASL)/English Bilingualism. Professionals who support families through early intervention are encouraged to receive training to implement the SKI-HI curriculum and use the Language Development Scales as an assessment tool for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers (ages birth to 5).
This event has been approved for 30.0 SCECHs.

Presenter
Debbie Lively is a professor and teacher education department chair at Saginaw Valley State University. She received her undergraduate degree in deafblind education and her PhD in special education with a cognate in educational administration from Michigan State University. Prior to her work at Saginaw Valley, Lively spent 29 years in public education as a classroom teacher, teacher consultant, and home visitor for young children with exceptionalities. While in public education, she developed and coordinated a birth through three general education program, providing inclusive opportunities to young children with exceptionalities and their families.
In addition to serving as a national SKI-HI trainer, Lively has served as president and specialty set representative for the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) Division for Communication, Language, and Deaf/Hard of Hearing; CEC interdivisional collaborative chair; CEC Children’s Action Network representative; and the first CEC Division Relations Chair. Lively co-authored and received a $13 million grant through the State of Michigan for birth-to-five initiatives. In addition, she was the host for Ready Set Grow, a show in which each episode explored the developmental stages of infants, toddlers, and preschoolers using the Ages and Stages Questionnaires.
Lively is committed to the philosophy that “early intervention” does make a difference and it is the responsibility of educators as a community to provide the best resources possible for families of young children.
