Please read the following information on how MDE-LIO’s events and services are currently impacted due to COVID-19. We appreciate your understanding and patience during this time, and we will continue to provide updates as they become available.

In accordance with Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services’ recommendations designed to help prevent the spread of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), MDE-LIO has canceled all in-person workshops and other events until further notice. We will continue to offer online workshops and webinars as scheduled.

Online and Phone Support

MDE-LIO staff members will continue to provide support and answer questions via phone and email. Reach us by emailing, submitting a message via our contact form, or calling the main number at 517-241-7083. To contact a specific staff member, visit our staff directory.

Braille and Large Print Book Production

MDE-LIO will not ship books until further notice. However, please continue to submit requests for braille textbooks and large print books for the 2020–2021 school year. We are working on a rotation schedule for production requests to make sure students have textbooks for next school year.

American Printing House for the Blind (APH) Products

MDE-LIO will not ship APH products until further notice, and APH itself is closed. Please do not submit any APH requests at this time, as we will not be able to fulfill orders. We will send another update when we are able to resume this activity.

Other MDE-LIO Loan Programs

In addition to APH orders, MDE-LIO will not be able to accept or fulfill requests for the following loan programs until further notice:

  • Assistive Technology Library
  • Blind/Visually Impaired and Deaf/Hard of Hearing Resource Libraries
  • Unified English Braille Literacy Expansion Program
  • ABCs for VIPs

We’re Here for You

These are challenging times, and we must all work together to stay healthy and safe. MDE-LIO staff will continue to be available to answer questions and support families, students, and educational staff.

Throughout the next few weeks, we will provide information and resources via LIVE With LIO webinars (visit our event section for more information) as well as on our website, this email list, and our Facebook page.
