Whether you plan to stay home or go on vacation this summer, there are many ways to connect with your child or teen who is Deaf/Hard of Hearing (DHH). Reading, playing games, and talking together are great ways to build connections and support language development. Below are some tips for getting started.

Summer Reading

One great way to make a connection is to read a book and do activities related to the characters or topics. MDE-LIO offers DHH Reading Kits for families of students in Michigan who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing (DHH). Each kit includes a book and ideas for related activities. Kits are available to check out for four weeks.

Our DHH Resource Library offers a variety of titles to choose from, including a wonderful selection of books based on characters who are DHH. Check out the list of books within the Deaf Culture and Identity section of the DHH Resource Library for a current list of titles.

For families looking for ways to use Listening and Spoken Language strategies in their summer reading time, Hearing First offers a Summer Reading Book List with suggested activities.

Summer Bucket List

Create a summer bucket list of activities or adventures you would like to do as a family. Activity examples can be found on Pinterest, and Summer Bucket List offers a free printable with tons of ideas. Set a goal to complete your list, such as one activity per week. Create a calendar for your activities (or use a printable checklist), which can be used to spark conversations around upcoming opportunities for family fun.

Activities can be things you can do around your home:

  • blow bubbles
  • draw with sidewalk chalk
  • ride bikes as a family

The list can also include quick trips outside of your home:

  • go to a park
  • visit the zoo
  • go to the beach
  • go camping

A mix of indoor and outdoor activities makes the summer an exciting time in Michigan for family adventures and making memories. What is on your family’s bucket list this summer?
