MDE-LIO is currently in the process of separating our operations into two divisions. The purpose of this is to help the field clearly identify who we are and who we serve.

Part of this reorganization will entail rebranding with two separate names:

  • Michigan Department of Education Resource for Blind/Low Vision (MDE RBLV)
  • Michigan Department of Education Resource for Deaf/Hard of Hearing (MDE RDHH)

Additionally, we are changing our use of “blind or visually impaired” to “blind or low vision.” This reflects a shift away from outdated language toward more inclusive language, much like updating the term “hearing impaired” to “deaf or hard of hearing.”

These changes will be gradual, with updates to our communications and documents being made over the course of this year. We will have new social media pages this summer, and we will plan to launch our new websites this fall.
