“Nature is a tool to get children to experience not just the wider world, but themselves.” – Stephen Moss

Connecting with nature is important to the health and wellbeing of people of all ages, but it’s especially important for children to connect with the natural world. Nature is all around us in the beautiful state of Michigan. It can be found while exploring a local park, walking to the corner store, sitting on a patio, or lying in the grass in the backyard. No matter where you are, we encourage you to spend time outdoors, in nature, this summer. There are many ways to connect with the world around you, and here are a few ideas to use to enjoy your summer.

Build a Fort
Use sheets, chairs, or sticks to create a fort outdoors (or indoors) for imaginative play.

Create a Mud Kitchen
Set up a “kitchen” with pots, pans, and a small table. Let kids mix water, dirt, leaves, and flowers into their own “recipes” outside.

Take Story Time to the Park
Bring books and read aloud while enjoying the natural world around you.

Play with Water
On hot days, fill water balloons, run through sprinklers, or set up a backyard splash zone.

Have a Park Picnic
Pack sandwiches, fruit, juice, and a blanket and find a secluded spot in a park. Bring some yard games or bubbles and enjoy the afternoon with your family.

Build a Fairy or Gnome Garden
Place tiny decorations and plants in a container or shaded garden corner.

Visit a Farmers' Market
Try a fruit or vegetable you’ve never had before. Explore the texture, taste, and scent.

“Sad child? Nature. Cranky child? Nature. Bored child? Nature. You’re welcome.” – Penny Whitehouse
