EIPA Requirements for Educational Interpreters
Educational interpreters must be certified to work in Michigan public schools.
The Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA), administered through MDE-LIO, is one route interpreters can take toward gaining certification.
EIPA requirements for interpreters working in elementary settings (birth through grade 6):
- Earn a score of at least 4.0.
- Pass an approved written assessment if the 4.0 has been earned after August 31, 2016.
- Possess an elementary endorsement. An interpreter who only has a secondary endorsement cannot work in an elementary setting.
EIPA requirements for interpreters working in secondary settings (grade 7 through age 26):
- Earn a score of at least 4.0.
- Pass an approved written assessment if the 4.0 is earned after August 31, 2018.
- Possess an elementary or secondary endorsement.
EIPA Written Assessment
One approved written assessment is the EIPA Written Assessment, which is scheduled through Boys Town. Visit classroominterpreting.org for registration information.
Underqualified Interpreters
Educational interpreters who do not have at least a 4.0 but plan to work in an elementary or secondary setting may apply for temporary assignment as an underqualified interpreter. These exceptions are provided for one school year and are only granted under specific circumstances outlined in Rule 27 of Michigan's Qualified Interpreter Rules [PDF].
To apply for an exception, the interpreter and the employing school district must each submit an application to the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA).
